Many have asked – how to relieve shoulder pain?
To cut to the chase, if you suffer from shoulder pain that is chronic and intense, the following information on how to relieve shoulder pain probably won’t apply to you.
Chronic moderate to severe shoulder pain is a serious condition that can bring about a multitude of other condition to many other body parts (e.g. Neck, chest and thoracic spine).
This is not to lessen recent shoulder pain or pain that is on a lower pain scale, for if you disregard any pain (regardless of how little), the condition can develop insidiously and result in more serious painful levels.
Nevertheless, today I am going to discuss how to alleviate mild to moderate shoulder pain.
1. Rest: This cannot be overemphasized. Too many people when they hurt their shoulder, may rest for a bit, take some pain medication and as soon as it kicks in, they’re up again and going on with their daily activities.
The key is to just relax and apply ice (hold off from any medication if possible). Apply an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) to your shoulder for no longer than 20 minutes, then take it off for an additional 20 mins and then reapply.
2. Heat: If your shoulder pain is chronic then apply heat. But here’s a little trick that will make your heat therapy more beneficial: Use moist heat.
The way in which to do this is to pour hot water into a hot water bottle. Then soak a small towel with hot water, wring it out then wrap it around the hot water bottle.
This moist heat will pass through much deeper into your joint and the heat from the hot water bottle will keep the towel hot.
3. Stretching – If you just sustained your injury, I would not recommend you to carry out any stretching as this may serve to worsen your condition.
On the other hand, if your injury is sub-acute to chronic, it is advised to delicately stretch as this will help decrease your pain and help maintain your shoulders mobility.
I really hope this helps and if you’re currently suffering with chronic moderate to severe shoulder pain and you would like to find out if you’re a candidate for our treatment, just contact us.
